Birth Injury and Birth Trauma

Each year there are children born with serious permanent physical or cognitive injuries that could have been prevented with appropriate monitoring, interventions, diagnosis, or treatment.

Birth injuries are often caused by oxygen deprivation at the time of delivery, which can result in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and cerebral palsy.  Often such injuries can be prevented through the proper monitoring of the fetal heart rate and an early intervention such as with a caesarean section.

Other birth injuries and trauma can include

  • Kernicterus
  • periventricular leukomalacia (PVL)
  • neonatal stroke, hypoglycemia
  • shoulder dystocia
  • Erb’s palsy
  • brachialplexus injuries
  • trauma from forceps
  • twin to twin transfusion syndrome.

All of these can result in life altering injuries for the child and their family.

We are a proud member of the Birth Injury Lawyers Alliance of Canada and consider ourselves a leader in birth injury cases in Manitoba.
